How do I get access to the API?
Visit app.napkin.ai, go to Account Settings (or Team Space Settings), open the Developers tab, and create a new API token. No approval or waitlist, you can start making requests right away.
Is there a Napkin MCP server for Claude?
No, but since it's a standard REST API, you can build your own MCP server on top of it. You can also connect Napkin to Claude and other AI tools through Make or n8n.
Which plan includes API access?
Every plan does. Access isn't tied to a plan; any account can create a token and call the API. What changes by plan is credits, rate limits, and watermarks.
Can I send a PDF or document instead of text?
No. The API works from text only. Paste or send your content directly, no file upload needed.
Where do I find all the brand styles?
21 Built-in Styles are listed in the docs, or create a Brand Style in the app to match your brand. Pick one when you send a request, or leave it out and let Napkin choose.
How do I find a visual_id or style_id?
In your Napkin app, click on any visual, then open the 'Info' panel from the dropdown menu. Expanding Info shows the Layout, Style ID, and Visual ID for that exact visual, ready to copy.
What happens if I run out of credits?
Requests return a no_credits error until you top up. Upgrade your plan, purchase a one-time top-up, or wait for your credits to refresh with your next billing cycle.
Are there API rate limits?
Yes. Limits scale with your plan; higher tiers get higher limits. Need more than that? Contact us about custom plans.
